Bought this book last year and kept it for a while. In fact, read the second series "Meetings with remarkable men" few years back and "In search of the miraculous" last year. Started reading this book (of course with warning from Gurdjieff) couple of months ago. So far completed around 300 pages! Osho's comments on this series of book is absolutely true.

I forgot to say something about Gurdjieff and his book ALL AND EVERYTHING – perhaps because it is a very strange book, not even readable. I don’t think there are any living individuals except me who have read from the first page to the last. I have come across many Gurdjieff followers, but none of them had been able to read ALL AND EVERYTHING in its totality.
It is a big book – just the opposite of the ISA UPANISHAD – one thousand pages. And Gurdjieff is such a rascal saint – please allow me this expression, rascal saint – he writes in such a way that it becomes impossible to read. One sentence may go running on for pages. By the time you come to the end of the sentence you have forgotten its beginning. And he uses words he made up himself, just like me. Strange words... for example when he was writing about kundalini, he called it kundabuffer; that was his word for kundalini.
This book is of immense value, but the diamonds are hidden among ordinary stones. One has to seek and search.
I have read this book not once but many times. The more I went into it the more I loved it, because the more I could see the rascal; the more I could see what it was that he was hiding from those who should not know. Knowledge is not for those who are not yet capable of absorbing it.
Knowledge has to be hidden from the unwary, and is only for those who can digest it. It has to be given only to those who are ready. That’s the whole purpose of writing in such a strange way.
There is no other book stranger than Gurdjieff’s ALL AND EVERYTHING, and it certainly is all and everything.

Watched a good set of movies recently. Though I couldn't write reviews about them, at least would like to share a few here.

Seven Samurai

One of the magnificent films of Akira Kurosawa. Story line is how a group of Seven samurai teams together and helps a village against the attack of Bandits. Completely enjoyed the every aspect of the movie.

Laputa - Castle in the sky

Another wonderful animation film of Hayao Miyazaki. It is a tale about search of Laputa, a castle in the sky. Why it is searched and what happens in the search? I liked the story narration and music of the film. Must watch for animation lovers. Also watch Miyazaki's other movies like Princess Mononoke, Spirited away.

Peepli [Live]

This is popular in the media now. How ironic? You would have heard the story already from many reviews and news. So watch it in the screen if you have not. Most of the actors are new and theater artists. A good satire..

Downfall

This movie starts in the day (in 1945) where Germany got attacked by Russians. Berlin is surrounded by them and what happens in the background of Hitler and his men. Amazing war sequences and cast. Bruno Ganz's acting as Hitler is stunning (see the stumbling fingers). Though Germany has done horrifying things during world war II, you will pity for them while watching this movie.

Le Grand Voyage

One of the best films I watched recently. It is a story of a Father and his son during their Haj pilgrimage. Characterization of both persons, how a father influences his son are wonderful. A must watch movie.

Thought of writing about many things but my laziness stops me and keeps me in bliss :)

Roger Federer's loss to Djokovic in US open semi's would have upset the tennis world. As a spectator of tennis from 1990's and watching Federer for quite a few years, I would reckon that his level has not dropped. Whenever he makes those forehand errors and errors at important points, he loses the match. That's all.. In this match too, after making so many errors, Djokovic has to fight hard to win the match. Nothing will happen with talking now as that is over.

I'm very proud to watch Federer as the one who definitely set the standards of playing tennis at such a high level. Without that, the contemporary players would not have tried so hard. One more thing I noticed in this US open is Nadal's change in game style. It is a welcoming one. His serve was fast and accurate. He was aggressive and playing towards the net. As usual, he covered the court very well and played shot for shot. With his new weapons, he would be at the top for some time. Congrats to him for winning the career Grand slam.

Players like Djokovic, Murray cannot pose him a threat in Clay or Grass courts. They have to lift their game and should not lose the confidence while playing against players like them. One of the things I adore about Federer is his fitness and stamina. Playing so many consecutive years and entering almost (over 90%) all semi's without taking absence in any of the slams, he is the best. His game style allows him too. I've never seen him getting tired or exhausted and his court coverage is a wonder to watch.

Del potro, Tsonga are playing well but they lack the fitness and taking absence. And the media as usual started comparing the records of Nadal and Federer. A player's greatness should not be compared like this. Then what about Borg, Sampras, Becker, Edberg etc? Are they not great?

Hope new players will come again and give Nadal a threat. That's the game!

நேற்று "ஐன்ஸ்டைன் எடிங்க்டன்" படம் பார்த்தேன். உலகப்போர் நடக்கும் காலக்கட்டத்தில் நடக்கும் அறிவியல் கண்டுபிடிப்புகள், அறிவியலாளர்களுக்குள் நடக்கும் கருத்துப் பரிமாற்றங்கள், நாட்டுப் பற்றைக் கடந்த உண்மையை அறியும் முனைப்பு இவை தான் அப்படத்தின் சாராம்சம்.

அது ஐன்ஸ்டைன் அவ்வளவாக பிரபலமடையாத நேரம். ஆனாலும் அவரைப் பற்றிய எதிர்பார்ப்புகள் ஆரம்பமாகியுள்ள காலக்கட்டம். புவியீர்ப்பை பற்றிய அவரது ஆராய்ச்சிக் கட்டுரைகள் வெளியாகியின்றன். ஜெர்மனியின் சர்வாதிகாரம் பிடிக்காமல் குடியுரிமையை துறந்து சுவிட்சார்லாந்தில் மனைவி மிலேவா மற்றும் இரு குழந்தைகளுடன் வசிக்கிறார். அப்பொழுது மேக்ஸ் பிளாங்க் அவரைக் காண வருகிறார். அவருக்கு பேராசிரியர் பணி, 12000 மார்க் சம்பளம் மற்றும் குடியுரிமை ஜெர்மன் அளிப்பதாக சொல்லி அவரை அங்கு வந்து ஆராய்ச்சிப் பணியை மேற்கொள்ளச் சொல்கிறார். அறிவியலுக்காக சில தியாகங்கள் தேவை என்கிறார்.

அதற்கு முக்கியக் காரணம் என்னவென்றால் அவர் ஏதாவது முக்கியமான கண்டுபிடிப்பை நிகழ்த்தினால் அந்த பெருமை ஜெர்மனியைச் சேர வேண்டும் என்பது தான். ஐன்ஸ்டைன் அங்கு போவதற்கு தயக்கம் காட்டுகிறார். அதற்கு ப்ளாங்க் ரயில் டிக்கெட்டைக் கொடுத்து பின்னர் அவரின் மனம் மாறும் போது வர சொல்லி செல்கிறார். ஐன்ஸ்டைனின் மனைவி மிலேவாவும் ஒரு இயற்பியல் வல்லுனர். அவர் தன் கணவரிடம் அவரது ஆராய்ச்சியைப் பற்றி சதா கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார். சில சமயம் அவரது குறிப்புகளை ஆராயவும் செய்கிறார். ஆனால் ஐன்ஸ்டைன் தனது சமன்பாடுகளில் புது வகையான குறியீடுகளைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறார். அவரது ஆராய்ச்சியில் தன்னை ஏன் பயன்படுத்தவில்லை, தன்னிடம் ஏன் அதைப் பற்றி தெரிவிப்பதில்லை என்று மிலேவா கேட்பது ஐன்ஸ்டைனுக்கு பிடிப்பதில்லை. பிறகு ஐன்ஸ்டைன் குடும்பத்தைப் பிரிந்து ஜெர்மனி செல்கிறார்.

எடிங்க்டன் அவரது சகோதரியுடன் இங்கிலாந்தில் வசித்து வருகிறார். இங்கிலாந்தின் தலைச்சிறந்த அளவியல் நிபுணர் அவர் மற்றும் ராயல் அஸ்ட்ரானமிக் சொஸைட்டியின்(RAS) உறுப்பினர். RAS அவரை ஐன்ஸ்டைனின் கட்டுரைகளை ஆராய சொல்கிறது. ஏனென்றால், அவர்களைப் பொறுத்த வரை ஐசக் நியுட்டனின் புவியீர்ப்பு விதிகளே இறுதியானவை மற்றும் மாறுபாடு இல்லாதவை. அவர் கடவுளுக்கும் இடம் விட்டு சென்றிருக்கிறார் என்பது அவர்களது கருத்து (ஆனால் நியுட்டன் காலத்தில் அவரை எத்தனைப் பேர் எதிர்த்தார்கள் என்பது வேறு விஷயம்).

எடிங்க்டன் ஐன்ஸ்டைனின் கட்டுரைகளைப் படிக்கிறார். அதில் ஏதோ ஒன்று இருப்பதாக தன் சகோதரியிடம் சொல்கிறார். அங்கு கடை நடத்தும் ஒரு ஜெர்மானிய குடும்பத்தினரை ஒரு கூட்டத்தினர் தாக்குவதை தடுத்து அவர் தனது வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்து வருகிறார். அவரும் அவரது சகோதரியும் "குவார்க்கர்ஸ்" என்ற அமைப்பைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள். அவர்களுக்கு மனிதாபிமானம் மற்றும் மத நல்லிணக்கம் முக்கியமான ஒன்று.

அந்த ஜெர்மானியக் குடும்பத்திற்கு ஆதரவு கொடுத்ததற்காக எடிங்க்டன் அவமானப் படுகின்றார். RAS-ம் அவர் மேல் கோபம் கொள்கிறது. ஒரு நாள் அந்த ஜெர்மானிய பெண்ணிற்கு கிரக மாதிரிகளை காண்பிக்கும் போது (டெமோ) அவர் புதனின் (Mercury) சுற்றுப்பாதையை கவனிக்கிறார். அது நியுட்டனின் விதிகளுக்குள் அடங்க வில்லை. உடனே இதை விவரித்து இதற்கு என்ன காரணம் என்று கேட்டு ஐன்ஸ்டைனுக்கு கடிதம் எழுதுகிறார்.

ஐன்ஸ்டைன் ஜெர்மனியில் வேலைக்குச் சேர்ந்த பிறகு அவருக்கு அங்கு நிலவும் மனிதாபினாமற்றச் செயல்கள் பிடிப்பதில்லை. அவரது சொந்தக்காரப் பெண் எல்ஸாவை பார்க்கிறார். அவர்களுக்குள் ஒரு உறவு ஏற்படுகிறது. அதற்கு ஒரு காரணம் அவளது இசை ஈடுபாடு மற்றும் அவளுக்கு இயற்பியலைப் பற்றி ஒன்றும் தெரியாததும் தான். அவர் வேலைச் செய்யும் போது ஒரு குறுக்கீடும் இருக்க கூடாது என்று ப்ளாங்கிடம் ஏற்கனவே நிபந்தனை வைத்திருக்கிறார். ஆனால் அவருக்கு ஸ்பான்ஸர் செய்யும் தொழில் அதிபர் அவரால் போருக்கு என்ன ஆதாயம் செய்ய முடியும் என்ற ரீதியில் பேசுகிறார். ப்ளாங்க் அவரின் கண்டுபிடிப்பு மட்டும் சாத்தியமானால் அறிவியல் வழியாக இங்கிலாந்து போன்ற நாடுகளை வெற்றி அடையலாம் என்று சமாதானம் சொல்கிறார்.

புதனின் சுற்றுப்பாதைக்கான விளக்க்கம் குறித்து ஐன்ஸ்டைனும் பதில் எழுதுகிறார். அந்த சமயம் ஒரு போர் தாக்குதலில் சுமார் 15000 இங்கிலாந்து படையினரை ஜெர்மனி குளோரின் வாயுவைப் பயன்படுத்தி கொல்கிறது. அதனால் இங்கிலாந்தில் ஜெர்மானிய அறிவியல் சஞ்சிகைகளைத் தடை செய்கிறது. எடிங்க்டனையும் ஐன்ஸ்டைனுடன் தொடர்பு கொள்ள வேண்டாம் என்று கூறுகிறார்கள்.

ஒரு நாள் ஐன்ஸ்டைன் அங்குள்ள பரிசோதனைக் கூடத்தில் பறவைகளை வைத்து விஷவாயு பரிசோதனை செய்வதைக் கண்டு அதிர்ச்சி மற்றும் கோபம் அடைகிறார். பிறகு ப்ளாங்க் ஒரு மேனிஃபெஸ்டோவில் (Manifesto of 93) கையெழுத்திட சொல்கிறார். அது என்னவென்றால் ஜெர்மனியின் அரசியல் நடவடிக்கைகளுக்கு அறிவியலாளர்களும் உடன்படுவதாக. பல பிரபல விஞ்ஞானிகள் கையெழுத்திட்டாலும் ஐன்ஸ்டைன் அதற்கு மறுக்கிறார். இதனால் அவர் மேல் கோபமடைந்து அவரை அங்கு நுழைய அனுமதி மறுக்கிறார்கள்.இதற்கு நடுவில் அவரை குழந்தைகளுடன் காண வரும் மிலேவா அவரை எல்ஸா சந்திக்க வருவதைக் கண்டு சந்தேகம் மற்றும் கோபம் அடைந்து திரும்பி சென்று விடுகிறாள். பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் நுழைய அனுமதி மறுக்கப்பட்ட ஐன்ஸ்டைன் உடல் நலம் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு அலைகிறார்.

பிறகு ஒரு நாள் எல்ஸாவை சந்திக்க் செல்லும் போது அவளும் அவரை பார்க்க தயங்குகிறாள். தெருவில் நடந்து வரும் போது வண்டிகள் இவரைக் கண்டு தானாக பாதை மாறி செல்வதைக் கண்டு இவருக்கு பொறி தட்டுகிறது. கிரகங்களின் பாதையும் இவ்வாறு இருக்கும் என்று அனுமானித்து ஒரு புதிய புவி ஈர்ப்பு தியரியை எழுதுகிறார். அவருக்கு வரும் கடிதங்கள் பல்கலைக்கழக முகவரிக்கு வருவதால் அவர் ப்ளாங்கிடம் அனுமதி கேட்டு கெஞ்சுகிறார். பிறகு எடிங்க்டனுக்கு இதை ஒரு கடிதமாக ப்ளாங்கிடம் கொடுத்து அனுப்பச் சொல்கிறார்.

அவருடைய இப்புதிய புவியீர்ப்பு விளக்கத்தைப் படிக்கும் எடிங்க்டன் அசந்து போகிறார். இது கண்டிப்பாக நியுட்டனின் கருத்துகளை மாற்றும் திறனுடையது என்கிறார். அதை ஒரு துணி, ரொட்டி, ஆப்பிள் வைத்து அருமையாக விளக்குகிறார். பிறகு இனிமேல் ஒன்று நியுட்டன் அல்லது ஐன்ஸ்டைன் இருவரில் ஒருவர் கருத்தே உண்மை என்கிறார். இதை நிருபணம் செய்ய வரும் சூரியக் கிரகணத்தின் போது நட்சத்திரத்தின் இருப்பைக் கணக்கிடுவது தான் சிறந்த வழி என்று தீர்மானிக்கிறார். அதாவது ஐன்ஸ்டைனின் கொள்கைப்படி சூரியனுக்கு அருகில் வரும் நட்சத்திர ஒளியானது அதன் புவி ஈர்ப்பினால் வளையும். இதை புவி ஈர்ப்பு விலகல் (Gravitational lensing) என்று அழைக்கிறார்கள். அதற்காக RAS தலைவரிடம் ஆப்ரிக்கா செல்ல அனுமதி வாங்கி கொண்டு செல்கிறார். அதற்கு அவர் கூறும் காரணம் இதன் மூலம் நாம் ஒன்று நியுட்டனின் கருத்தை உறுதிப்படுத்தலாம் அல்லது ஐன்ஸ்டைனின் கருத்தைப் பரிசோதிக்கலாம் என்பதே.

உடல் நலமின்றி இருக்கும் ஐன்ஸ்டைன் சுவிட்சர்லாந்திற்கு சென்று மனைவி மற்றும் குழந்தைகளைச் சந்திக்கிறார். அவர்களுக்கு விவாகரத்தாகிறது. ஆப்ரிக்காவிற்கு ஒரு உதவியாளருடன் எடிங்க்டன் செல்கிறார். அங்கு மழையும், மேகமுமாக இருக்கிறது. இதன் நடுவில் புகைப்பட பேழைகளும் பழுதடைகின்றன. கிரகணத்தன்று மழையும் நின்று, மேகமும் கலைந்து அவரை நட்சத்திர இருப்பை படம் பிடிக்க உதவுகிறது. பிறகு இங்கிலாந்திற்கு திரும்பும் எடிங்க்டன் அனைவருக்கும் முன்பாக முடிவுகளைப் பரிசோதிக்கிறார். அதற்கு முன் அவருடன் வந்தவர் சோதனையைப் பற்றி விளக்குகிறார். பிறகு எடிங்க்டன் புகைப்படங்களை வைத்துப் பார்க்கும் போது ஒளி விலகல் நடந்தது நிருபணமாகிறது. RAS-ன் தலைவரும் சில உறுப்பினர்களும் வெளிநடப்பு செய்கின்றனர்.

இதன் மூலம் ஐன்ஸ்டைன் பிரபலமாகிறார். அவரை மீண்டும் ஜெர்மனிய விஞ்ஞானிகள் ஆதரிக்கின்றனர். அவரை பேட்டி எடுக்க வரும் போது நாக்கைத் துருத்திய படி போஸ் கொடுக்கிறார். எல்ஸாவுடன் இணைகிறார். பிறகு ஒரு அறிவியல் சந்திப்பிற்கு செல்லும் போது அவர் எடிங்க்ட்னை சந்திக்கிறார். இருவரும் கைக்குலுக்கி நன்றி தெரிவிக்கின்றனர்.

ஒரு முக்கியமான அறிவியல் கட்டத்தை BBC சற்று மசாலாவுடன் ஆவணப்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார்கள். இருந்தாலும் பார்ப்பதற்கு நன்றாக இருந்தது. ஐன்ஸ்டைன் வேடத்தில் ஏண்டி செர்கிஸ் (Andy Serkis) நடித்திருக்கிறார். இவர் Lord of the rings படத்தில் கோலம் (Gollum) கதாப்பாத்திரத்திற்கு உயிரூட்டியவர்.

இதில் ஐன்ஸ்டைன் சொல்லும் ஒரு வாசகம் முக்கியமானது.

" நம்மால் முடிந்த வரை முழு முயற்சியுடன் ஒரு வேலையைச் செய்ய வேண்டும். அப்படி செய்யாவிட்டால் நாம் குற்றவாளிகள் தாம்"

Inception - Dream world

Still I remember this story of Chuang Tzu. It is as follows..

Once upon a time, Chuang Tzu dreamed that he was a butterfly, flying about enjoying itself. It did not know that it was Chuang Tzu. Suddenly he awoke, and veritably was Chuang Tzu again. He did not know whether it was Chuang Tzu dreaming that he was a butterfly, or whether it was the butterfly dreaming that it was Chuang Tzu. Between Chuang Tzu and the butterfly there must be some distinction. This is a case of what is called the transformation of things.

Discussion: "This shows that, although in ordinary appearance there are differences between things, in delusions or in dreams one thing can also be another. The transformation of things proves that the differences among things are not absolute "

Inception is almost similar to Chuang Tzu's dream. Story is a one liner but the script is multi-layered and complex one. It is better to watch in the big screen for a good experience. Initially I thought it will be difficult for me to understand the dialogue of this film. But it was pretty easy to understand it and the story line. Only thing is to remember all the things happening simultaneously.

From Wiki, I read Christopher Nolan had created this script nearly 10 years ago!! He wanted to make some big movies before making this one. So he made "Batman begins", "The Prestige" (one of my favorites) and "Dark Knight". One of the amazing thing was the filming of the movie. They finished it in approximately 6 months of time.

It is really worth an effort to make a movie with this storyline. Technically brilliant one.Amazing cinematography, CG, music... Hats off to Christopher Nolan and his team!! This movie will grab its share in Oscars.

The Path of Self Enquiry

Once, when Ganapati Muni was present in the hall, a group of villagers asked, ‘How are we to control the mind?’
In reply Bhagavan asked them to look into the origin of the mind and explained the path of self-enquiry. Soon they left and Bhagavan as usual went out for a walk.

Remarking to the others [Ganapati] Muni said, ‘The path of Self-knowledge which Bhagavan teaches is so difficult even for the learned, and Bhagavan advocated it to the poor villagers. I doubt whether they understood it and still less whether they can practise it. If Bhagavan had advised them to practise some puja or japa, that would have been more practical.’

When this was conveyed to Bhagavan, he commented, ‘What to do? This is what I know. If a teaching is to be imparted according to the traditional way, one must first see whether the recipient is qualified or not. Then puja, japa or dhyana are prescribed step by step. Later the Guru says that this is all only preliminary and one has to transcend all this. Finally, the ultimate truth that “Brahman alone is real” is revealed and to realise this, the direct path of self-enquiry is to be taught. Why this roundabout process? Should we not state the ultimate truth and direct path at the beginning itself rather than advocating many methods and rejecting them at the end?’

தூக்கம் என்ற ஒத்திகை

பள்ளி நாட்களில் நான் இரவு சாப்பிடும் போதே உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டே தூங்கி விடுவேன். சில சமயம் ஹாலில் எங்காவது தூங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் என்னை என் அப்பா படுக்கை விரித்து அப்படியே நகர்த்தி விடுவார். காலையில் எழுந்தால் இரவு சாப்பிட்டேனா என்று பல முறை யோசித்ததுண்டு. அம்மா, பாட்டியிடம் கேட்டு சந்தேகத்தை தீர்த்துக் கொள்வேன்.

கல்லூரி நாட்களிலும் நான் அதிகம் கண் விழித்ததில்லை. நான் தினமும் கல்லூரி (110 கிமீ போக வர) சென்று வந்தது ஒரு காரணம் மற்றும் அப்பொழுது இணையம், தொலைக்காட்சி நிக்ழ்ச்சிகள் இல்லாதது இன்னொரு காரணம். பரீட்சை நாட்களில் கூட அதிகம் போனால் 11 மணி வரைக்கும் தான் விழித்திருப்பேன்.அதுவும் 9 மணியில் இருந்து பல தடவை சாமியாடி அப்பா, "இதுக்கு பேசாம படு" என்று சொல்லிய பிறகு.நான் பல தடவை சொல்லியும் எனது சக மாணவர்கள் நம்பியதில்லை.

எந்த சூழ்நிலையிலும் (ஒலி, ஒளி) எனது தூக்கம் கெட்டதில்லை.இது பெருமையா என்று எனக்கு தெரியவில்லை. அதிகாலையில் தான் என்னை சுற்றி நடப்பவைகளைப் பற்றிய ஒரு பிரக்ஞை ஏற்படும். நடு ராத்திரியில் வீட்டுக்கு யாராவது வந்தால் விடிகாலை வரை வீட்டுக்கு காவல் நிற்க வேண்டியது தான். என் அம்மா, பாட்டி ஏதாவது கோவில் விழாக்களுக்கு சென்றால் வெளியில் பூட்டிக் கொண்டு சென்று விடுவார்கள். நான் தான் இப்படி என்றால் என் நண்பன் ஸ்ரீகாந்த் எனக்கும் மேல். அவனை விடிகாலையிலும் எழுப்ப முடியாது :)

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind - Mahatma Gandhi.

What will Jealousy, False pride, Betrayal do where there is no Love, Sacrifice? Ran shows that in a grandeur way.

I couldn't believe that Akira Kurosawa has directed such a film in 1985. Based on the King Lear by Shakespeare, Akira weaved around the story with his creativity. If I tell the story here, it would not be good for the audience to watch it. Also I cannot review the movie as well. It is out of the scope for me to do. I would like to share some of my thoughts on this wonderful movie.

- Wonderful picturization of King Lear story in the movie.

- Acting by each character throughout the movie was amazing. Casting was Perfect!

- Background score for war scenes, meetings, sad events etc was amazing. Especially the flute score. Also to show the confused state of mind, there is a shrieking music which creates unpleasant nature in us.

- Characterization of that clown, telling the truth through him is Akira's touch.

- Throughout the film, Buddha's message is spread out. There is a dialogue at the end of the film. The Clown cries asking whether there are any Gods to see this and why we have to cry? For that, one of the best characters in the film, Tango replies that in fact Gods themselves are weeping seeing this war done by men.

- Landscape scenes are mesmerizing. While watching in Laptop (with DVD) I was amazed and felt as if I'm there. If I would have watched it in a big screen, it would have given me a blissful experience.

- Artwork and the costume for the movie was awesome. Those castles, dresses of the King, Lords, soldiers etc., still wanders in my mind.

A Must-watch Masterpiece from the Master Director of the Cinema! A Salute to him!!

Writer S.Ramakrishnan gave a nice introduction to this book. Got it from San Diego public library and read it in a week (its quick for me indeed!). It's like reading 1001 nights and Vikramadhityan stories, organized well in chapters. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

A must read book with a good narration and mathematical puzzles!

Surely he is one of the threatening fast bowlers of all time and who could change the match with a spell. Postmen in the mountains

Do you like Story telling, Traveling, Photography, Watching Nature, Human Relationship and Mountains? If so, this is the movie for you. A Must watch..

Story line is pretty simple but with a good screenplay. A Father who was postman in the mountain area is getting retired because of arthritis. His son is taking over his job. Father has a faithful friend in the form of Dog (Buddy). He does not want to go with son. So the father accompanies his son with buddy explaining the route, procedure etc. How the relationship between the father and son evolves? How the relationship between the son and buddy evolves? That's it. No extravaganza. Life is beautiful in its simplicity. That's where this film scores.

Story narration is through dialogue (between Father and son), monologue (by Father or son) and silence. I didn't get a feeling that I'm watching a Chinese movie anywhere. Characterization is perfect. Amazing Cinematography and BGM. There are some scenes in this movie which will bring you tears for sure. Buddy's acting cannot be rated at all. When the movie ends, I'd a feeling why this ended up so quickly? (Movie run time < 90 min).

There is a scene in which Father tells his son
"This job is tough (walking in the mountains, reaching the remote villages which are not developed) but you have a chance to meet nice people on the way. That makes you keep going"

How true this is!!

விருமாண்டி படம் வந்த போது அதில் "ரஷோமோன்" படத்தில் வந்தது போல் கதைச்சொல்லல் முறை (பல நபர்களின் பார்வையில் ஒரு நிகழ்வைச் சொல்லுதல்) அமைந்திருப்பதாக கேள்விப்பட்டேன். பல இயக்குனர்களின் ஆதர்ச இயக்குனரான அகிரா குரோசவா-வின் மாஸ்டர்பீஸான ரஷோமோனைப் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்று நீண்ட நாட்களாக நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். அது சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன் நிறைவேறியது.கருப்பு வெள்ளைப் படங்களில் எனக்கு ஒரு தனி ஈர்ப்பு உண்டு. உணர்வுகளைத் தெளிவாக சொல்லக் கூடியவை. இப்படமும் அதில் சேர்த்தி.

ரஷோமோனைப் பற்றி ஒரு தனிப்பதிவாகவே எழுத வேண்டும். இதில் என்னை ஆச்சர்யப்படுத்திய விஷயம் பல உண்டு. அதில் முதலாவது, அந்த படத்தின் துவக்கத்தில் காண்பிக்கப்படும் அந்த பாழடைந்த வீடு மற்றும் அதன் பெயர் தான் ரஷோமோன் என்பதும். வித்தியாசமான காட்சியமைப்பு கொண்ட இப்படம் திரைக்கதை அமைத்தலுக்கு சிறந்த உதாரணம்.உலகச்சினிமாப் பிரியர்கள் கண்டிப்பாய் பார்க்க வேண்டிய படம்.

இணையத்தில் இதைப்பற்றி தேடும் பொழுது "அந்த நாள்" திரைப்படத்தில் இந்த கதைச்சொல்லல் முறை பயன்படுத்தியது தெரிந்தது. அதையும் சில மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பு தான் பார்த்தேன். அந்தக்காலத்தில் வந்த ஒரு வித்தியாசமான படம். இயக்கியவர் வீணை வித்வான் எஸ்.பாலச்சந்தர்.நடிகர் சிவாஜி கணேசன் நடித்ததில் எனக்குப் பிடித்த சில படங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்றாகிவிட்டது. கதைக்களன் (திரைக்கதை வசனம்: ஜாவர் சீதாராமன்)சிறப்பாக அமைத்திருந்தது ஒரு காரணம். பாடல்களைத் தவிர்த்தது முக்கியமான விஷயம். பல கிளிஷேக்களைத் தவிர்த்து எடுக்கப்பட்ட படம். இதுவரை பார்க்காமலிருந்தால் கண்டிப்பாக பார்க்கவும்.

மேலே பார்த்த இருப்படங்களைப் பார்க்கும் பொழுது சற்றுக்குறைவான கதை அழுத்தத்துடன் கொஞ்சம் ஹீரோ ஒர்ஷிப்புடன் வந்த ப்டம் விருமாண்டி. அதைக் கொஞ்சம் கவனித்து எடுத்திருந்தால் இன்னும் சிறப்பாக வந்திருக்கும். ஆனாலும் இது ஒரு சிறந்த சோதனை முயற்சி. இப்படத்தினாலேயே அந்த இருப்படங்களையும் பார்க்க நேர்ந்தது. அதற்காகவே கமலுக்கு ஒரு நன்றி :)

In Search of the Miraculous

Gurdjieff, I came to know him through a discourse from Osho, is a Mystic Master. I've read his book "Meetings with remarkable men" last year. But it is the second in his series "All and Everything" which has 3 books and should be read in the order. Also he suggests to read every book 3 times to grasp the content. He emphasizes the word "read". Because most of the time, we gaze through the book and not involving ourselves with the book.

After reading that book, I've bought his first(Beelzebub's tales to his grandson) and third series (Life is real only then, when I am). But I've to read them yet. Waiting for the right time. I came across "In search of the miraculous" , a book written by his disciple P.D.Ouspensky in which he describes his meetings with Gurdjieff and teachings.

He calls Gurdjieff as G in this book. So far I've read 1/3rd of this book. But it is really astonishing. It has many things in common with eastern thinking. It gives a new idea of many things which we have known or came across already. Also it explores many unknown areas. Especially the "laws of three" and "laws of seven" surprised me.

I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to do a study of science and spirituality together. I will continue reading this..

Must watch films - 2

Another Italian film in the same genre. It is "La Strada" literally meaning "The Road" or "The Street". One of the notable films made by famous director Federico Fellini.

A rude guy with no emotions.An innocent girl with day dreams. Relation between them. This is the storyline.

Anthony Quinn, one of my favorite actors plays the lead role Zampano (rude guy) and Giulietta Masina (innocent girl) plays the role Gelsomina. I'm not going to tell the story of the movie here. Anthony Quinn had lived his character in this movie. What to say about Giulietta Masina? She delivers different expressions in her face just like that in a minute. Perfect characterization.

Last scene will leave you in tears. That music is awesome. I would love to watch this movie again.

Must watch films - 1

As most of the Cinema lovers, Me too love watching Italian films, the mother of Neo-realistic movies. The first one I watched in this genre is "Bicycle Thief(ves)" by Vittorio De Sica.

It starts in the period where unemployment is at its peak post world war. The Protagonist Antonio looks for a job and he gets a job with a must have requirement of Bicycle. He gets it by selling the blankets in his house. While on his work pasting posters in the city, another person steals Antonio's bicycle. This makes Antonio's job in stake. Antonio roams around the city with his friends and son to search it. What happens in the end? Its better to watch it in the screen.

Characterization in the film is awesome. Acting of that little boy is superb. Screenplay of the film simply ties the viewer with the movie. I couldn't believe that this movie came in 1948.

India Vs Australia

This series is going interesting in the way nobody including the Indian team knows how the drama of the game ends. If bowlers do well, batsmen flops and vice versa. But the way we lost 3 matches in this series is horrible. Losing is not at all a problem hoping that the team takes away the lessons from it.

In the 6th ODI played at Guwahati, I think the mistake was in electing batting first. Winning the toss, knowing the damp conditions of the wicket in the early hours, having a team which can play spin bowling well during the chase, why should they chose batting first? Only Dhoni knows..

But the credit goes to bowling and fielding of Australian team. Whoever comes new to the team is capable of performing well in the international level from the beginning. Quality matters!! Also, the captaincy of Ponting really matters here. He has a great cricket mind and encourages the young players.

There are positive things in this series. Like Suresh Raina playing a crucial knock in 5th ODI (Oh man, what a knock from Sachin!! I've to write a separate blog for this), Praveen kumar playing important knocks including this 6th ODI..

P.S. I've never seen such a funny way of getting bowled (Yuvraj's wicket) in the game so far.

Nothing special to say about this Genius.In his time, he was well ahead of that. Here is a small boxing clip from his movie "City Lights". This movie (as well some of his others) is my all time favorite.

About this boxing event: Charlie wants to get some money for his lover to pay the house rent. He was forced to enter this boxing event where he is about to fight with a guy. They makes an agreement of 50-50 sharing irrespective of whoever wins. But that guy leaves the place as the cops are behind him. Finally, the organizers arranges another person who is a good boxer. Charlie wants to make agreement but that person says "Winner takes it all". What happens in the fight? See it below.

I've seen "Amores Perros" sometime back which starts with a car accident where three persons are present in that incident. Then the story expands from there with how the three persons joined there telling the past events. You would have seen the same style in Manirathnam's "Aaydha Ezhuthu". But this movie has 8 connecting points.

"Vantage Point" starts off with a political meeting taking place at Spain. US president is getting assassinated and bombings followed by that. Press (GNN in this movie) is covering it live in its professional(?) way. Wait, this is the first view. After this, there are some more views (7) remaining describing the incidents from different starting points. All this are shown starting from 11:59am till that bombing.

What has happened in the background and what is the climax? Please see it in the screen. Otherwise, you cannot enjoy it.

This movie has an excellent car chase scene like those in "Ronin" and "Transporter". An excellent action thriller!!

A wonderful test encounter between two old rivals. First match itself began with such thrill and huge batting display.

Till the last moment, Aussies had a chance and English crowd is cheering up the players for every ball.. They surely miss the killing combination of Warne and McGrath who would have packed up easily. Jimmy and Monty had a good last wicket partnership to save the match.

It's always a wonderful experience watching tests played abroad, especially in Australia and England.We cannot have such experience when a test match is being played in Asian subcontinent. They won't give the bowlers an edge and the match will not head for a result. But that's the fun, right?.

Testing player's abilities not only in batting, bowling but standing in the field with a concentrated mind. If you lose the focus even for a single moment, you will lose the wicket. Every session will change the course of the match.

Apart from the brilliant centuries from Aussies in the first innings, Paul Collingwood stood out in the second innings with his brilliant 74. He is such a gutsy player like Steve waugh.

I'm surely relieved of seeing T20 matches in IPL and World cup. They cannot give the enjoyment of watching Test match. It's a different cup of tea, indeed!!

What a match !!

Roddick deserved everything to win this match. Unlike the previous encounters, he had played exceptionally well. His movement and backhand shots are exceptional improvements. No need to mention his serve and forehand.

In many circumstances, it seemed that Roddick is going to win. But the resistance Roger gave in the second set to save four set points made the change. Asked them to play five sets, these guys played two sets extra. Serving at will is the plus point for Federer in important points and he did the same here. Thanks for finishing the match at 16-14 :) If it is anyone other than Roger, Roddick would have won the match in direct sets.

Congrats Roger on winning this record 15th title.

I'm getting addicted to Delhi-6 songs especially "Tere Arziyan" and "Masakali". I just loved Rahman's score in "Khwaja mere Khwaja" from Jodha Akbar (both song and instrumental version).This creates an interest to listen more on Sufi music and Qawali. Its not a comparison though this is his best than Slumdog millionaire.

I saw these 3 movies sometime back. All are having a good screenplay and silence is the main dialogue in many places. These movies depicts the human feelings superbly and the directors used this as a medium to portray the message they wanted to.

CHILDREN OF HEAVEN

The story line is simple. Ali lost his sister's shoes in a market. He could not find them after searching. Since they are poor, they don't want to tell their father about this and starts sharing the brother's shoes (School timings are different for boys and girls). When they come to know the shoe is with another girl, they don't want to ask her after seeing her family's condition. Ali helps his father in doing some gardening work for earning money. At that time he tells his father that new shoes has to be bought for his sister. His father confirms that.Ali participates in a race where the third prize is a pair of shoe. Does he wins the race and the girl gets a new shoe? Beautiful screenplay, acting by the kids.

SPRING, SUMMER, FALL, WINTER AND SPRING

The first Korean movie I saw. This is directed by notable director Kim Ki Duk. Again this story line is simple explaining the life cycle. This film somehow reminds me the Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. Excellent (I mean it) cinematography and music. Especially the film is shooted in the same lake all the seasons. The Silence interludes the movie superbly and it gives a wonderful experience.

THE WAY HOME

Another Korean movie. But the language doesn't matter to watch this kind of movies. You can realize this when you finish watching. It has very few dialogues and less conversation. It is a story (near real life experience in modern world) between a boy and his grandmother. This boy is from city (urban background) and his grandmother lives in a remote hilly area. Initially he doesn't like that place and his grandmother, who is dumb. Finally how he gets changed (Metamorphosis) is the story. He couldn't bear the separation from his grandmother at the end. I simply loved the wonderful location in this film. There are few incidents in this film which portrays the humanistic nature and unconditional love. How simple and straight forward their life is.

A Must Watch..

Malgudi days

One of my favorite books..I also loved watching this as a serial episode those days in Doordarshan and later in Sony. Illustrations of R.K.Laxman are simply superb and the background music of L.Vaidyanathan is pleasant.

Watching these episodes now is a favorite pastime for me :) This is lot a better than those crap TV shows which are shown these days monotonously in all TV channels.

Though this film has a controversial story line, the narration of the film is excellent. Bala went to a different level in direction. There is no character or shot irrelevant to the film. Ilayaraaja's music is outstanding and the sound of udukkai is still in the ears. Arthur wilson's camera work is excellent and we are running along with it during fight scenes. Jeyamohan's dialogue supports the film well.In Bala's films, the notable one is the natural fight scenes. I dont know how they shooted the scenes among the crowd. Everything seems realistic. They are not hyped but seems to be happening in a real life.
Thaandavan's character is outstanding. By seeing him, you could get to know his character. Arya and Pooja did a great work and I think this is the film of their life. They cannot get more than this. Somebody asked "Can you imagine Ajith in Rudran's character?". I doubt it.

Bala's Rudra Thaandavam..Marvellous effort by the team.Hats off..

முதலில் பத்ரி. இவர் கிழக்கு பதிப்பகத்தின் நிறுவனர். பன்முகம் கொண்டவர். அரசியல், அறிவியல் , கணிதம் என்று பல தளங்களில் எழுதுபவர். இவர்அறிவியல் கட்டுரைகளை சிறப்பாக தமிழில் எழுதுகிறார்.
இவரும் மற்றும் சில நண்பர்களும் தற்போது அறிவியல் என்று ஒரு தளத்தில் எழுதுகின்றனர்.

இப்போதைக்கு இவ்வளவே..

A Perfect finish to Sourav's career indeed. I'm not saying about his duck in the last innings, the win over aussies in the fourth test. Sourav, an admirer of Steve Waugh, became the first aggressive Indian captain. His domination over the selection of team had cost him more with the selectors commitee. Though his ODI record is as good as any in that form of cricket, his position was under question.

I enjoyed his pairing with Tendulkar as one of the best in cricket. Surely the youngsters (including M.Vijay) will remember you for the way you supported them.

Goodbye..We will be missing the "King of Off-side"...

Adieu, Kumble

Don't know whether India will be getting such a determined bowler (player) in near future. In many aspects, he is like Courtney walsh, a gentleman bowler. He can bat well than him though. He's not a big turner of the ball like his contemporaries Warne or Murali but with his limitations, he was excellent in taking wickets.Right throughout his career, he never caught in any controversy or ill manners on the field. Media had made his final days of career worse by criticizing. Still his commitment in the team is unforgettable and the respect for him among the fans will not be diminished.

Harbhajan will be missing you the most as you two are the best spin pair in the world cricket. Thanks for the entertainment you've provided so far, Anil Bhai!!

P.S: He will be in Indian dressing room @ Nagpur for Ganguly's last test, Laxman's 100th test and will be busy with his SLR camera there.

The Last Emperor

I've taken this film from library and watched it. I thought it might be some sort of historical story of emperor. But this one is totally different from what I thought. It takes us through the life of "The Last Emperor" of China. It starts with the war criminals being brought to China from Russian captivity and the Ex-Emperor being one of them. Story starts from there with the 3 year old becoming an Emperor.

Nice interlude of scenes between the current and past. With the excellent cinematography and music, we are there in China. Breaking of world wars, its impact and the aftermath were portrayed well.

At the end, when the emperor goes back to palace by buying a visitor pass, telling a boy that he was the emperor and proving him, was a spectacular finish..

This is a lengthy film I've seen after "Ten Commandments" and "Ben Hur". But it doesn't bore me. If you love History, this is a must watch!!

Sachin - Oru Sahaabdham

I'm watching Sachin right from his debut.In those days, we don't have TV @ home. So me and my friends were watching Sharjah matches (in those days it was mostly between India,Pakistan,W.Indies) in a friend's house. During schooldays, in the interval and free periods, we used to run outside school to a nearby TV showroom to watch the cricket matches. This continued in College days as well where I ran to hostel and sometimes to English dept. to see the match.
Once I went to Chepauk ground to see an Irani trophy match. I saw his batting in live for a short time. That made my day. If I start on talking about his batting or sensational matches, it can go on. Nowadays, media focus is so much that even if he didn't play well for one match, they start making noise. This happens not only for him but for all the senior players.

Keep going, Sachin. Ponting is behind you closely. But still you've made into the hearts of millions of cricket fans like anyone before!! We cannot imagine a team without you playing in the future..

ஒரு சமயம் திருவனந்தபுரம் சென்றிருந்தோம். அங்கு எங்களோடு நெருங்கிய நண்பரும், ஒரு வகை பந்துவுமான ஒருவர் வீட்டில் கல் யாணம். சம்பந்தி வீட்டார் பெரிய ஸர்க்கார் உத்யோகத்திலிருப்ப வர்கள். ''பாரதி வந்திருக்கிறார்'' என்ற தைக் கேட்டதுமே, 'சம்பந்திகள் உத்யோகஸ்தர்கள். ஒரு பக்கா சுதேசியை இந்தச் சமயத்தில் வர விடக் கூடாது' என்று தீர்மானித்து, பாரதியை நேரில் கண்டும்கூட, ''விவாஹத்துக்கு வாருங்கள்'' என்று அவர் அழைக்கவில்லை. ஆயினும், அவ்வீட்டு அம்மாளுக்கு மட்டும் பாரதியிடம் உள்ளன்பு உண்டு.
அவ்வீட்டுக்குச் செல்லக்கூடா தென்று நாங்கள் பலமுறை வேண்டிக்கொண்டும் கேளாமல், அழையாத வீட்டுக்குள் நுழைந்தார் பாரதி. வீட்டு எசமான் வாவென்று அழைக்கவில்லை. எனினும், கொஞ்சங்கூட முகவாட்டமின்றி மடமட வென்று உள்ளே சென்றார். வீட்டு அம்மாளிடம் சென்று, ''அம்மா! குழந்தைக்கு விவாஹம் ஆயிற்றா?'' என்று பரிவோடு கேட்டார். அந்த அம்மணியின் கண்களில் நீர் துளித்தது. மனது உருகிற்று.
''பாரதி! என்னை மன்னிக்க வேண்டும். நீர் மாசுமறுவற்றவர். நாங்கள் உத்யோக ஆசையினா லும் பணத் திமிரினாலும் சில சமயங்களில் மெய்ம்மறந்து தங் களைப் போன்ற உத்தமர்களின் சகவாசத்தைக் கைவிடுகிறோம். நேற்று தங்களை நேரில் கண்டும் அழையாதிருந்தோம். அதிலி ருந்து என் மனது, 'தவறு செய் கிறாய்' என்று வாள் கொண் டறுக்கிறது. எத்தனையோ பெரிய பெரிய மனிதர்கள் வந்து கல்யாணம் விசாரித் துச் சென்றார்கள். ஆயினும் இப்போது தாங்கள் வந்து விசாரிக்கும்போது எனக்கு ஏற்பட்ட சந்தோஷமும் ஆறு தலும் இதற்கு முன் ஏற்படவில்லை'' என்றாள்.
''அம்மா! மனதுக்கு மனமே சாட்சி! நான் வரா விட்டால் உன் மனம் துயரடையும் என்று தெரிந்தே, என் வீட்டார் தடுத் தும் நான் இங்கு வந்தேன்'' என்று கூறினார் பாரதி. திருமணத் தம்பதி களை வரவழைத்து, அவர்களைத் தழுவி ஆசீர்வதித்தார்.
சாயங்காலம் மூன்று மணிக்கு, வந்திருந்த விருந் தினரும் கல்யாண வீட்டாரும் மிருகக் காட்சி சாலைக்குச் சென்றனர். அப்பா வும் நாங்களும் சென்றோம்.
அங்கே மிருகங் களைப் பார்ப்பதில் சற்று நேரம் கழிந் தது. மறுபடியும் எங்களுக்குக் கஷ்டம் ஆரம்பித் தது. ஏனெனில், அப்பா எல்லா மிருகங்களையும் கையினால் தொட்டுப் பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்தார். குரங்குகள், கரடிகள், காட்டு மனிதன் (ஊராங் உட்டாங்) எல்லாவற்றையும் தொட்டுப் பார்த்துக் கடலை, பழம் கையிலே கொடுத்தார். அந்த மிருகங்கள் அப்பாவை நகங்களினால் கிழித்துப் பிறாண்டி விடாதிருக்கவேண்டுமே என்று நாங்கள் கவலைப் பட்டோம். மிருகங்களுக்குத் தீனி போடும் வேலைக்காரக் கிழவனொருவன் இவரது போக்கைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டு, ''சாமி! புலியையும் சிங்கத்தையும் மட்டும் தொடவேண்டாம். ஏனெனில், அவைகளுக்கு ஒரு சமயம் இருக்கும் புத்தி மற்றொரு சமயம் இராது. அவை கையினால் லேசாக ஒரு தட்டுத் தட்டினால்கூட உங்களால் தாங்க முடியாது'' என்று எச்சரிக்கை செய்தான்.
''நீ பயப்படாதே! என்னை ஒன்றும் செய்யாது. நான் தழுவிக்கொண்டால் அவை எனக்கு ஒரு தீங்கும் செய்யமாட்டா'' என்று அப்பா சொன்னதும், எங்க ளுக்குப் பயத்தினால் உடம்பு கிடுகிடென்று நடுங்க ஆரம் பித்தது. என் தாயார், ''சிங்கத் திற்கு நல்ல புத்தி கொடு, பகவானே!'' என்று மனதிற்குள் பிரார்த்தித்தார். அரை மனதோடு கிழவன், சிங்கத்தை அருகில் வரவழைத்தான்.
''மிருக ராஜா! கவிராஜ் பாரதி வந்திருக்கிறேன். உனது லாகவ சக்தியையும் வீரத்தையும் எனக்குக் கொடுக்கமாட்டாயா? இவர்கள் எல்லாரும் நீ பொல் லாதவனென்று பயப்படு கிறார்கள். உங்கள் இனந்தான் மனிதரைப்போல உள்ளன்று வைத்துப் புறமொன்று செய்யும் சுபாவம் இல்லாதது என்ப தையும், அன்பு கொண்டோரை வருத்தமாட்டீர்களென் பதையும் இங்கிருப்போர் தெரிந்து கொள்ளும்படி, உன் கர்ஜனையின் மூலம் தெரியப் படுத்து, ராஜா!'' என்றார் பாரதி.
என்ன ஆச்சர்யம்! உடனே சிங்கம் கம்பீரமாகப் பத்து நிமிஷம் கர்ஜித்தது.
அவருக்குத் திருப்தியாகும் வரை அரைமணி நேரம் மிருகேந்திரனைப் பிடரி, தலை, காது எல்லாம் தடவிக் கொடுத்துவிட்டு, எங்களது தொந்தரவினால் வாயில் மட்டும் கைவிடாமல் அதனிடம் விடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டார்.

மகுடி இசையில் 'வந்தே மாதரம்'!
மகாகவி பாரதி, தன் நண்பரின் மகளான யதுகிரி மற்றும் சிலருடன் பாம்பாட்டி மகுடி வாசிப்பதைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அவர் களைக் கண்ட அவனும் குஷியாக மகுடி ஊதினான்.
பாரதியாருக்கு என்ன தோன்றி யதோ தெரியவில்லை, தன் மேலாடை யைக் களைந்து அவனுக்கு அளித்து விட்டு வெறும் வேஷ்டியுடன் நின்றார். அந்தப் பாம்பாட்டி மனம் மகிழ்ந்து, அவரை வணங்கிவிட்டுச் சென்றான். வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பியதும் பாரதியை சிறுமி யதுகிரி கேட்டாள்: ''ஏன் அந்தப் பாம்புப் பிடாரனுக்கு உடைகளைக் கழற்றித் தந்தீர்கள்?''
பாரதி புன்முறுவலுடன், ''எனக்கு நாலு பேர் கொடுக்கத் தயாராயிருக் கிறார்கள். அந்த ஏழைப் பாம்பாட் டிக்கு யார் கொடுப்பார்கள்? நானே அதைப் பற்றி யோசிக்கவில்லை; உனக்கென்ன அந்தக் கவலை?'' என்று பதிலளித்தார்.
மறுநாள் மாலையில், பாரதி சில தேசிய கவிதைகளைப் பாடிக் காட்டி னார். அதில் ஒன்று, 'வந்தே மாதரம் என்போம்' என்று தொடங்கும் பாடல்.
அதில் சிறப்பு என்னவென்றால், அந்தப் பாம்பாட்டி மகுடியில் வாசித் தானே, அதே மெட்டில்தான் பாரதி இப்பாடல் எழுதினார்.

Happened to come across this movie trailer. Seems to be interesting. Story line has close resemblances with "The Alchemist". It is directed by Santosh Sivan, one of the best cinematographers in India. Location for the story is Kashmir and the photos / movie stills in the site looks amazing. Waiting to watch it.

Siddhartha , a wonderful experience

By seeing the title, I thought it is about the life and teachings of Gautama, the Buddha. But it is about the life of Siddhartha, a contemporary lived along with the Buddha.

Federer, the Emperor

Most of the people say that Federer's reign has come to an end after his defeat to Nadal in Wimbledon finals. But I could not accept that. We cannot judge his class act just by a single defeat. If you would have seen the finals (I saw till the second rain interruption in 5th set), Federer made errors in the crucial points. His invincible serve was broken by Nadal in first 2 sets because of his own errors. Definitely, Nadal's game has improved a lot comparing to his previous encounters with Federer. His confidence against Federer has improved. I love to watch Natural grass court players somehow, like Becker, Edberg, Sampras and Federer.

Its Federer's class which has definitely improved the opponent's game to compete with him. He has taken the game to the next level. Though he's not at his best, he's reaching Semis and Finals in Grandslams. Come on, who said his reign is ended...

Watch out guys, the emperor will be back!!

Books I read

Recently I read these books. Both are autobiographical and unfinished.Both gave the experience of being with them while reading.

"Meetings with remarkable men", the second series of Gurdjieff's "All and everything". One of my favorite.I watched the movie (1979) filmed based on this book. But it could not capture the beauty of writing and did not give the experience I had while reading.

"My Days", R.K.Narayan. Just liked the narration in his style.

Dasavathaaram

It is an unplanned first day show for me to watch "Dasavathaaram".Some of my colleagues said this would be like "Hey ram" or "Aalavandhan" and not ready to see it on first day :)

I don't want to narrate here the story of the film. Though this film doesn't need Kamal to don 10 roles, 4/5 characters are essential and well linked. The theme of the movie is said right in the beginning of the movie. As per Chaos theory, every being in the universe is linked with everything and the disturbance of one would disturb the universe.

Kamal dont need to prove that he can take 10 roles in a movie but he did with perfection in some roles. His Michael madhana kama rajan still scores one of his best.

In this film, I loved especially the roles of

Balaram Naidu, RAW officer which he only can do with such humour.

Poovaragan, Social activist who fights against Sand mafia. Body mannerism, language are done with perfection.

Rangarajan & Krishnaveni paati, Excellent makeup and good dialogue rendering.

It is wonderful effort by the entire unit and we have to appreciate the multi faceted Kamal haasan for Story, Screenplay and Dialogue. At some places, the timing dialogues reminds of Crazy mohan. I think if Sujatha would've been there, he would have provided his suggestions in some places.Makeup is good for all the roles except that tall man Kafiullah. Other than Kamal, the only character that stands in my mind is "Pattabi" M.S.Bhaskar who guides Fletcher (villain) with his butler English.

Overall, it is a film you can watch!!

Adieu, Henin

Again, a short break in blogging. There are lot to write and share but couldn't because of my time management.

Justine Henin's retirement is an unexpected event this year in sports. A fantastic player, though she is not gifted with physical stature. Among female players, after Steffi, I just loved watching her play. She is very fast, has a wonderful single hand backhand which most of the female players (and male players) don't have. Though she won most of her grand slams in clay, she is able to win on any surface.

Basho's Trail

I came across Basho, the Haiku Master, through Osho's discourses and Sujatha's writings. Haiku describes the experience of a person at that moment (Whereas some are writing now just to follow the number of words it requires). I didn't know that Basho had travelled so much until I read this article from "National Geographic Magazine", Feb. edition.

Sujatha..

From writer S.Ramakrishnan,who wrote about him in his article " Kathaa Vilasam" in Ananda Vikatan.

When I heard Sujatha's demise last week, I had remembered his writings I came across through "Ananda vikatan". His writing style, so simple and beautiful, made me one of his numerous fans. I've read few of his short stories, science fictions, novels of which I loved his "Srirangathu Devathaigal". Right from Sangam literature to modern writings, he had discussed on so many topics. He had even played a part in the production of film on Bharathiyar, "Bharathi" by Gnanarajasekaran.His love and works for Tamil cannot be forgotten easily. He left a space that cannot be filled.

I cannot write more than the articles given below.

Nandi hills trip

In the month of december, we (myself, Nishanth, Ranjith) made a bike trip to Nandi hills. The road is so nice that we didn't feel any problem at all. Nandi hills is 65 kms from Bangalore and can be reached by NH7 (Bangalore - Hyderabad). It is 1500 m above sea level. Monkey menace is so much over there and the place is not promoted by tourism department. Though it is a beautiful place which has some spots like Tippu drop, Nandi temple, Siva temple, Fort to see. Inzy retires..

Most of my favorite sports personalities got retired recently..Agassi, Schumi, Lara and Inzamam in that list now. I always adore him for his brilliant and solid batting. He is one of the great middle order batsman in the cricket history. I still remember the incident that happened during Sahara cup in Toronto where he chased a guy who called him "Aaloo". How can one forget his famous runouts? :)

Sivasamudram trip

Recently, myself and my college friends went to Sivasamudram and Talakad. Its heavy raining in Madikeri, Coorg area (catchment for Cauvery) and lot of inflow for KRS, Kabini dams. So they released lot of water (more than 1 Lakh Cu.ft/sec) and you can see the flow in the photos I shared.
Sometime back I went to the same place by bike with my office friends.But at that time, the falls didn't have this much of flow. I thought of blogging this trip but couldn't. See the photos of falls taken at that time. First one is Gaganachukki and the second is Barachukki.

P.S. Sivasamudram is 125 km from Bangalore and can be reached through Kanakapura road and Mysore road. Mysore road is very good till Maddur but with high traffic.Kanakapura road is not so good but with low traffic it makes biking interesting.
Places that can be visited nearby: Talakad(24km), Somnathpur(30km).

I came to know about Sujatha's birthday (73 year young :) ) from Desikan's blog. Then I read about Sujatha's short biography (சுஜாதா ஒரு எளிய அறிமுகம்) and it is interesting. Thanks to the author.
I read his "Srirangathu devathaigal" recently and in that book he narrates about his experiences and characters during his days in Srirangam. Nice and unique way of story telling..

Adieu, Prince!! , Facets of Madurai

I couldn't blog frequently nowadays. Though I'm busy with my work and studies, I should not tell that I dont have time for this. I can say that I forgot about blogging. There are lot of incidents happening around us. I came across some writings and thoughts which I want to share.

First is the retirement of the Cricket Legend

. We're going to miss a real entertainer in the future games though some can argue that there are other players. He is a Batting Wizard and on his day he can demolish any kind of bowling lineup. This is not an exaggegration but based on the watching of his cricket for quite a long time. As any sportsman, he too had his ups and downs, but he came back strongly everytime he went down. Whether it is a duel between Mcgrath or comparison between Sachin, it doesn't matter. One particular thing I want to mention here is, he is the best player against Murali. I still remember that he accumulated 600 runs in a test series against Srilanka in Srilanka. If I go on talking about his performances, it can go long. Thanks for the entertainment he provided!! Hope this legend will be remembered as long as the Cricket game is there.

Second thing is about an interesting article I read in today's "The Hindu". It is an excerpt from the book "Multiple facets of My Madurai" by Manohar Devadoss. I loved the pen and ink drawings much. Those are in and around Madurai. I'm thinking of buying this book.

Chennai Book Fair

One of the grand event that occurs in South India. I used to attend this book festival when I was there. You will be lost in the crowd of people and books. But this year, I think I cant make it. I've attended a book fair that happened 2 months back in bangalore. It is not so grand as the one that happens in Chennai.It started last week and will be ending on 21st Jan. This time, the venue was changed from Quaid-e-Millat College to St. George Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School campus at Poonamallee High Road (opposite to Pachaiyappas college) and number of stalls are more. Guys @ Chennai, Don't miss the event!!

I read a nice blog by Desikan on this event. Since this blog is in tamil, you need to install tamil fonts.

Historical Journey

Last week, I watched couple of good documentaries, one from National Geographic channel and other from Discovery channel. .

First one is about "Journey of man" which I have already posted some details. It was for 2 hours and the narrator took us to various places like India, Australia, Kazakhstan, Chukchi (Near arctic circle) etc. It was about the journey of man which started during Ice age. It was amazing to see how human beings survived during that period as the temperature in Chukchi is -50C now itself. It would have been much less in that period. The narrator ended the session with this saying, "We are all just 2000 generations apart. Before that all were from the same group that started from Africa."

Second one is about the Chinese empire. It gave the details of Chin dynasty during which "The Great wall of China" was built to protect the empire from barbaric invasions. The emperor was a great warrior but lost his mental stability later on. He was asking his ministers to search for immortality so that he can rule for a long time. Then he took some mercury compounds which poisoned him and died at 54. Then there was a war between his sons and the story continues. During the emperor's burial in a tomb, they buried with him "Terracota warriors" which they found during excavation. They buried even concubines, servants so that they can serve him when he comes back.

Another Children's day

Its another beautiful "Children's day" celebrations I had in my office. I think this is one good thing happening in my company and hope this will continue in future. They organised for children's day celebrations with the participants from three humanity organisations viz.

1. F.A.M.E. India
2. Samarthanam
3. Parikrma

Children from F.A.M.E sung a hindi song with good lyrics. Ofcourse they had a good voice.Then two girls from Samarthanam (having visual impairment) danced for a carnatic song (Bharatanatyam). Final program is from Parikrma in which a group of children sung a english song with good musical background. Couple of things I noticed are:
- They don't have no fear in expressing themselves.
- They are confident and happy in what they're doing.

The above is about the cultural program that took place. Coming to the motto of the program, these organizations are helping the community in their own ways.

F.A.M.E. India is helping out disabled (physically and mentally) people to learn education and other arts (like painting). Samarthanam is helping the children from low economy background, having visual impairment to continue their education in schools and they have good records in that. Parikrma is helping the children from slums to continue their school education in ICSE medium. These people have their own school (I think till 10th) and are going to bring Junior college(12th) soon (2008).

In a way, they are doing great service to our society. They are seeking not only our economical help but also our physical help (being present in their places to help them). Though I did the first one, I've to do the later one soon.

S.Ramakrishnan's writings

Most of tamil readers would have come across (or heard about) writer S.Ramakrishnan's writings. He is one of the best contemporary writer who has a unique style in writing. I came to know about him through Ananda vikatan (AV). He started with his first writing "Thunai ezhuthu (துணையெழுத்து)" in AV, then came up with "Kathavilaasam(கதாவிலாசம்)".

The first one is a kind of biographical, with several themes of life. In the second one he narrates some incident happened and making that coherent with some novel / story of a writer. He talked about several writers who are unknown to us and their writings. Both writings were impressive.

Then he started his third series, "Desandhiri (தேசாந்திரி). This time he wrote his "Travelogues" to different places. He narrated those experiences beautifully. He is a good story teller indeed. This article got over 2 weeks back.

Already, AV published his earlier writings in book form and I hope they will do it for this one too. If so, Go for it!! You can purchase their publications Vikatan online.
